100 Best Decorated Cookies!

I love baking special treats for my kids and I especially enjoy getting creative in the kitchen. Sometimes we bake together as a family and other times I surprise them after school with a plate of goodies. When I received 100 Best Decorated Cookies, I couldn't wait to get baking! You would not believe how many amazing recipes are in this book! Julie Anne Hession has compiled 100 of the best cookie decorating recipes including 750 step-by-step photos.

With so many great cookies to choose from I knew I had to pick something really special for my kids so what better than a Soccer ball and Baseball to celebrate their upcoming Spring Sports! Jackson will be starting his second season in coach pitch baseball while Mya and Parker are entering their very first season in a team sport. Check out these recipes for "Batter Up" Baseball from page 157 and Soccer Ball from page 158.

I went with a basic sugar cookie recipe and made classic royal icing with confectioners' sugar, meringue powder, warm water and lemon juice. I tend to do things semi-homemade so instead tinting my icing for the designs, I used small tubes of decorating gels purchased from the grocery store. I know, I know...cheater, cheater, pumpkin eater!!!

My kids were beyond surprised to come home after school and find their cookies! I made Mya a special pink soccer ball cookie and Parker got a blue soccer ball cookie. Unfortunately, my soccer balls turned out a bit subpar. I think the tinted icing would have worked better than the decorating gel. That's what I get for cutting corners! The baseball cookie turned out pretty good. Jackson liked his baseball cookie so much that he asked if I would make enough for his whole team...YAY ME!!!

Disclosure: I was not compensated for this post. I was offered a sample copy of the book in order to facilitate my review. These are just my two cents!
